How to Prepare for Your First CrossFit Competition

Competing for the first time is exciting and nerve-wracking in equal measure. Here's what to know before you show up.

Before the Event

  • Read the athlete guide cover-to-cover — know every movement standard
  • Practice any movements you're unsure about at competition standard
  • Prepare your gear bag: lifting shoes, grips, jump rope, knee sleeves
  • Plan your nutrition timing — eat 2–3 hours before your first heat
  • Review the schedule and know exactly when your division competes

On Competition Day

  • Arrive early — give yourself 60–90 minutes before your heat starts
  • Warm up thoroughly, especially for the first workout of the day
  • Ask your judge to clarify any movement standard before the clock starts
  • Start conservatively — pace matters more than opening speed
  • Cheer for other athletes — it will make your experience better too

The Right Mindset

  • Your first competition is a learning experience — placement doesn't define it
  • Everyone there started exactly where you are now
  • Focus on your own performance, not what others are doing
  • Celebrate finishing every workout — that's a win
  • Sign up for another competition before you leave the venue

After the competition, your results will be posted in the leaderboard. Search for the event on KettleBoards to see your final placements, compare scores across the division, and track how you've improved at your next event. Ready to find your first competition? CrossFit Competitions FAQ

A CrossFit competition is a fitness event where athletes compete in a series of workouts that test strength, endurance, and athleticism. Competitions range from local grassroots events for beginners to elite-level invitationals. Athletes are typically divided into categories by gender, age, and skill level, and may compete as individuals or teams.

There are currently 767 upcoming CrossFit and functional fitness competitions listed on KettleBoards for 2026. New events are added regularly as competition organizers publish their events across 36 countries.

Yes! Many CrossFit competitions offer scaled or beginner-friendly divisions specifically designed for newer athletes. These divisions feature modified workouts with lighter weights and simpler movements. Look for competitions labeled with "Scaled", "Foundations", or "Beginner" divisions in our directory.

Individual competitions have athletes competing on their own, while team competitions require groups of 2–4+ athletes working together. Some competitions offer both formats. Team events often include synchronized movements and partner workouts that add a collaborative element to the competition.

Use the KettleBoards competition directory to search by location. You can filter by country, state, or use the distance-based search to find events within a specific radius of your location. You can also browse our Find Competitions Near Me page for location-based results.

Expect a fun, supportive atmosphere. Most events include 3–5 workouts spread throughout the day with divisions competing at scheduled times. Arrive early to warm up, review the movement standards, and connect with other competitors. The community feel at CrossFit competitions is one of the things athletes love most — everyone cheers for everyone, regardless of division or skill level.

CrossFit competitions are scored by ranking athletes within their division on each workout. Workouts are scored by reps completed, weight lifted, or time to finish. Points are awarded based on finishing position in each event, and the combined score across all workouts determines the overall placement. Tiebreakers are typically handled by head-to-head results on a specific workout.

An online CrossFit competition lets athletes compete from their own gym or home box. Workouts are released on a set date, athletes film their attempts for video judging or submit scores through an honor system, and results are posted on a live leaderboard. This format removes travel requirements and opens competitions up to athletes worldwide — it's one of the fastest-growing segments in the sport.

Most equipment is provided at in-person competitions — barbells, pull-up rigs, rowers, assault bikes, etc. You will typically bring your own weightlifting shoes, knee sleeves, gymnastics grips, and a jump rope. For online competitions, you need access to a CrossFit gym with standard equipment. Always check the competition's athlete guide for specific gear requirements or restrictions before the event.

WOD stands for "Workout of the Day" — the programmed workout athletes complete in a given training or competition session. At CrossFit competitions, multiple WODs are programmed across the event day, each testing different physical capacities. WODs are typically scored either for time (finish as fast as possible), reps (complete as many reps as possible in a set duration), or load (lift the heaviest weight possible).

RX (as prescribed) means completing the workout exactly as written — the intended weights, movements, and rep counts. Scaled divisions use modified versions: lighter weights, substituted movements, or reduced repetitions. Most competitions also offer intermediate tiers between full RX and scaled. Competing scaled is a legitimate choice, especially for newer athletes — the goal is to compete honestly and within your current capability.

At in-person competitions, each athlete is assigned a judge who watches every repetition and confirms it meets the movement standard. No-reps are called when a movement doesn't meet standard (e.g., not hitting full depth on a squat). Athletes can request clarification on standards before the workout begins. For online competitions, athletes typically submit video evidence for review.

Eat a meal you know sits well in your stomach 2–3 hours before your first heat — typically carbohydrates and moderate protein, low in fat and fiber. Avoid anything new or unfamiliar on competition day. Between workouts, stick to easy-to-digest carbohydrates and stay hydrated. Many athletes bring bananas, rice cakes, or sport nutrition products for between-event fueling.

Most CrossFit competitions use third-party registration platforms. From each competition's detail page on KettleBoards, you'll find a link to the official registration page. Registration typically opens weeks to months in advance and spots fill up quickly for popular events. Watch for early bird pricing, which many competitions offer for athletes who register within the first few weeks of opening.
