About This Competition
Why:
We all love fitness, now we're using our fitness to express our love of others. One group that is often overlooked when we express our love for others is military veterans. The throw down seek to rectify that.
What:
The Never Back Throw down is a functional fitness event held in the format an online competition would be. While being held "online" admittedly has some drawbacks, its necessary for the logistics of this event. It eliminates the necessity of travel and simplifies the designed time-demand.
How:
The Neverask Throw Down will only cost $30/team, paid upon registration. We are also going to suggest fundraising $100/participant to our established fundraising campaigns. Campaigns will be visibly displayed at the top of the homepage of <www.AdaptiveAlliance.net>. Participants are not required nor expected to aid these campaigns financially at all. This is a fundraiser and we are only seeking a partnership in fundraising.

Who:
We'll have teams of two. Teamwork will be a necessary attribute for each team if they're to be successful. Ideally we'll pair one (1) veteran, any branch, with one (1) adaptive athlete, any PERMANENT disability. Because the number of adaptive athletes is fewer teams may feature a single veteran or adaptive athlete. This is done to avoid anyone of each community's members from participation if they so desire to participate.
When:
May 18 - June 8 2022. We'll have a WOD available for scoring each week for 3 weeks. That way if you only have the privilege of gym access once a week, that's all you'll need. MURPH is included in the WOD schedule. Thats a solo event where the average of both teammates performance will be their team's score.
The Never Back Throw Down is a fundraising functional fitness event to benefit veterans and adaptive athletes. Adaptive Alliance is running the event in conjunction with the Big Fish Foundation. This is FUNctional fitness. 100% of the funds received will go directly to the Big Fish Foundation. At no time will any funds even be in possession of Adaptive Alliance.
The Big Fish Foundation supports Veterans in taking back ownership of their narrative & mental health through education and training in the campaign against suicide.
It’s President/CEO is Brian Chontosh who is a veteran of the Marine Corps. Tosh, as he is known, competes in many endurance events. He was awarded the Navy Cross and qualified for the CrossFit games.
Adaptive Alliance is run by Joe Micco, Who is an adaptive athlete with the goal of enriching the adaptive community. Joe played football professionally in the Arena Football League and was in a 3 month coma from a motorcycle accident which left him with a brain injury. He is now an avid CrossFitter. He has a CrossFit level 2 certificate and an AIT certification (adaptive & inclusive trainer) from the Adaptive Training Academy.
Jeff McDonald has stepped up to be a valuable leader of the throw down. Jeff spent 12 years in law enforcement earning a spot on the SWAT team. Jeff and his wife reside in Montana. Jeff spent 4 years in the United States Marine Corps infantry, which is where he first met ‘Tosh. He deployed to combat zones in both Afghanistan and Iraq.
Participants are encouraged to fundraise $100 in donations to the pages registered on GoFundMe.
Big Fish Foundation:
Participants are not expected to make a donation there themselves. Say you are promised $40 from neighbors and $60 from classmates/coworkers/family. $40+$60=$100
The ability to donate will be prominently displayed on <www.AdaptiveAlliance.net> or visit the links above.
“Throw down” is often a term used for a CrossFit competition. Calling it the Never Back Throw Down highlights the attitude our athletes possess. (Never Back Down)
The event will pair 1 adaptive athlete with 1 veteran of any branch, if possible. There are not as many competitive adaptive athletes as there are veterans. Therefore teams may feature one adaptive athlete or one veteran. Because teams will come from many different locations, it will be held “online” to avoid the necessity of travel.
This event will feature 3 WODs performed over 3 weeks. WODs can be performed during a class, which is ideal when both teammates are in the same class. One of the events is MURPH, which is performed at many affiliates over Memorial day weekend. For that you are taking the average of the participants times as the score. You are encouraged to perform this workout at the place you train.

A burpee is akin to running alongside your partner and exchanging positions to fire. This exercise will replicate that. The course will be a straight dash of 20 meters. Every 5 meters ine athlete will drop down in the bottom of a burpee position at 5 meters. Once they drip down and are in position their teammate will sprint the 5 meters and drop down into the bottom of a burpee position. At that time the first teammate will simultanously asend from the bottom position and sprint 5 meters. This cycle of action will continue for 20 meters going one way and then returning 20 meters. A total of 8 exchanges will occur. The event will finish by both partners performing a burpee in unison.
