Broadreach Winter Classic 2020 - Live Stage
About This Competition
WELCOME TO the BROADREACH WINTER CLASSIC 2020 - LIVE STAGE!
presented by Proving Grounds Cx and Broadreach Fitness
Are we postponing?
No.
Thank you to everyone who has reached out with questions regarding the Broadreach Winter Classic 2020 - Live Stage scheduled for December 5, 2020, and the updated regulations on fitness facilities within Executive Order 180. We truly appreciate the care that the community has shown, not only for their fitness but also for each other.
Under the current guidelines, set to continue through December 11, 2020, Proving Grounds Championships and Broadreach Fitness are planning to host the Broadreach Winter Classic 2020 - Live Stage as scheduled. This competition will look different from events in the past in order to ensure the safety of all parties involved - athletes and volunteers alike.
Mask Usage:
Per Executive Order 180, effective November 25 at 5pm, all individuals inside a fitness facility are required to wear a cloth face mask whether working out or not. Further, when working out outdoors, individuals must wear a mask when they may be within 6’ of another person. Also note, the “strenuous exercise” exception from previous Executive Orders has been removed. As a team competition, there will be a high likelihood of you and your partner being within 6’ of each other at any time, therefore masks will be required during workouts both inside the facility and outdoors.
In accordance with the latest Executive Order, we are expecting all individuals at the Live Stage to wear a mask at all times, whether they are working out or not - within the appropriately social-distanced “athlete village”, while warming up, while competing, etc. This is for all judges, volunteers, and vendors as well.
Athletes and teams should have ample opportunity to begin acclimating to mask usage during workouts leading up to the competition, as they are required inside all fitness facilities across the state.
The only exception to this is a person who “has a medical condition or disability and cannot wear a face covering (including, but not limited to, any person who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious or incapacitated, or is otherwise unable to put on or remove the face covering without assistance).” This is NOT a replacement for the removal of the strenuous exercise exception. Breathing hard based on strenuous exercise WILL NOT be regarded as requisite “breathing difficulty,” triggering the exception” without a pre-existing medical condition or disability.
Limited Attendance:
Attendance to the Broadreach Winter Classic 2020 - Live Stage will be limited to athletes, volunteers, and vendors only. We understand the enthusiasm that the greater fitness community has for our competitors, but ask that any person who is not working or working out, please stay at home. We truly appreciate your understanding and look forward to our next chance to have everyone get together. #bwc2021 anyone?
Bottom Line:
Is this ideal? No. Is it a chance to show our resilience as a community? Yes. Is it better than gyms being completely shut back down? Also yes.
A phrase used quite often to describe functional fitness is the “unknown and unknowable.” It is time to prove that we can back it up.
Proving Grounds Championshisp and Broadreach Fitness believe strongly in the ability to adapt and overcome. The strength of our athletes and communities will shine through.
Thank you for your understanding and we welcome questions.
See you all on the fifth!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Live Stage promises to be bigger and better in the third year!
Why?
1: Seeded heats to ensure the most engrossing in-person competition on the day of the Winter Classic.
2: A top-tier "money heat" for the highest ranking men's and women's teams based on Online Stage performance.
3: Another chance for you and your partner to compete together AT NO EXTRA COST TO YOU.
HOW IT WORKS:
The Broadreach Winter Classic, scheduled for Saturday, December 5, 2020, will have three different levels of competition: Rx, Intermediate, and Scaled.
- Rx: One heat each for men and women. Heavy. Hard. Brutal. Cash prizes. You have to earn your spot in this division via the online qualifier. Weights and movements may reach levels seen at Regional/Sanctional events.
- Intermediate: Think of this as "old-school" Rx. Athletes here are well rounded but may not have the strength that current "Rx" competitions sometimes call for. You do the CF Open and pretty much all the benchmark WODs as prescribed.
- Scaled: You may have some spots in your fitness that you're still filling in - gymnastics, strength, etc. On a general day-to-day basis you probably scale the workouts at your local gym.
The BWC Online Stage will have two divisions to feed into the three division of the live competition in December:
- Rx/Intermediate: All teams vying for these two divisions will compete against each other in the online qualifier. The top teams will be placed in the "Rx" heat in December, with the remainder being placed in the "Intermediate" heats.
- Scaled: Everyone wanting to go Scaled in December will do the same here in the Online Stage.
The Live Stage will consist of four guaranteed workouts for all divisions and heats. A fifth (Final) workout will be held for a single heat of each division for the top qualifying teams based on their performances throughout the day. Workouts will be released, one at a time, following the closing of the Online Stage. At least one workout will be saved and announced during the Athlete Briefing on the morning of the Broadreach Winter Classic 2020 - Live Stage.
AND HERE IS THE KICKER!
Every team that competes in the BWC20 Online Stage will receive a discount code to be used when registering for the December, in-person main event to offset the cost of the Online Stage. You will pay NOTHING EXTRA out of pocket for the extra competition. You literally have nothing to lose. MAKE SURE TO REGISTER FOR THE ONLINE STAGE FIRST, SO THAT YOU CAN RECEIVE YOUR COUPON CODE FOR THE LIVE STAGE REGISTRATION!
See you on the leaderboard!

Establish a Team 11RM (Rx) or a Team 9RM (Int, Sc*) Overhead Squat.
Weights will be taken from a rack. Teams will be responsible for replacing the weight on the rack if the bar is dropped to the ground.
Each athlete must perform at least 1 repetition.
The Team RM is a sum of the two athletes' max-effort unbroken sets at a given weight. E.g. if Intermediate Athlete 1 performs 6 unbroken repetitions, then Intermediate Athlete 2 must complete 3 unbroken repetitions at that same weight.
Scaled may choose to perform Front Squats, but all teams performing Front Squats will be scored below all teams performing Overhead Squats regardless of weight lifted.
Score is the heaviest weight at which a team successfully completes the Team RM.
