About This Competition
What happens when you combine a traditional 5K with a CrossFit competition?
You’ll find out at “Run For A Life”, an event benefiting the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation hosted by Waypoint CrossFit.
Proceeds from this event will directly support the scholarship fund of The Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation which provides veterans and first responders with the opportunity to participate in Post-Traumatic Growth retreats.
Divisions available for scaled, RX and adaptive athletes. Awards will be given to top 3 female and male athletes in each division.
A little more about the event: What better way to combine first responders, active military, veterans, CrossFitters and civilians, then with a running and body weight type competition. No barbells will be used on this day (sorry weightlifters). Whether you are a weekend warrior, gym rat, or 5k lover.......this is for you. Every workout will include running and one or two other movements. All athletes will compete in 3 workouts.
A little bit more about The Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation: PTSD has grown and expanded programs to support local veterans, as well as first responders in the Pacific Northwest. We know that there are pressures and trauma of experiences in their jobs that only those who serve can comprehend and are asked to endure. These programs include Monthly Huddles, Post -Traumatic Growth Workshops, and scholarship opportunities for Post-Traumatic Growth Retreats.
History: United States Army Private First Class Kyle Marshall Farr, of the 240th Quartermaster Unit SSA Platoon which supported the 169th Support Battalion during Operation Iraqi Freedom was an infantryman. When he returned home, he was treated for Post Traumatic Stress and diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury at both Walter Reed and Perry Point VA Hospital in Maryland.
At 27, Kyle’s life was cut short. He died from an overdose in a Baltimore hotel room on March 7, 2009, the first night of being discharged from his treatment. He was laid to rest in Hamilton, VA. where he spent most of his childhood.
Born out of tremendous grief and a determined desire to help other veterans, his mother, Leslie Mayne, along with her family and friends determined to honor Kyle’s memory and service to his country by seeking better outcomes for other returning veterans. The Race for A Soldier in Gig Harbor, WA. was created in 2011 and the beginning of a movement that is bringing hope and healing for our veterans, helping them make peace with their past and develop programs that foster “post traumatic growth.”
More about WAYPOINT CROSSFIT: Waypoint’s mission is to establish a legacy of fitness among the families who live in our community in a passionate, professional, and fun way. Waypoint holds an annual Masters only competition, The Maritime City Battle every summer. Waypoint is expanding to add this event to their annual calendar.
