The 3rd Annual AMRAP for JOE
About This Competition
Welcome to 3rd Annual AMRAP for JOE!
(From Joey's sister, Jackie).
This memorial workout (WOD), is in memory of Joe Loftis 6/13/90-7/30/16. Joe was (is) my younger brother (by 3 years). He was my best friend. He was an athlete, a kind-hearted, hilarious, loving, handsome, giving, smart, and talented young man. He was friends with everyone and would help anyone in need.
When the news of Joe’s passing went public…. people were shocked. I remember reading so many comments from people stunned, asking “how?!” Thinking it surely had to be a car accident of some kind. Our community, his reputation….drugs weren’t even close on the radar of possibilities.
Joe was studying to be a firefighter. He hurt his back and needed surgery. After surgery, he was prescribed opiates. As you can now guess, this is where his story took a turn. He became addicted and in a very short, fast, and furious fight with addiction he lost his battle and the Lord called him home.
I’ll never forget growing up with him...his shy personality, his hilariously clever whit. He always spent time with our family and made it a point to do things to make each of us smile. He had my back more times than I can count. He grew into his personality through sports and high school. Looking back I see red flags I missed...it’s hard not to kick yourself constantly over that. I was supposed to be his role model. I was supposed to save him from something like this.
He overdosed on heroin a few times that landed him in the hospital, this was our first indication anything was going on at all. Then maybe a month later I came home from class one afternoon and found him overdosing. I had no idea what that even meant then really. He looked like he was sleeping. His lips turning blue. I called 911 and they had me doing CPR on him until paramedics arrived. Several shots of Narcan later and he was taken to the ICU for a week. My mom FINALLY was able to get him on a rehab waiting list. Nothing available anywhere around us. It’s sickening. He came home from the hospital and we took shifts staying home, making sure no one came around our home or contacted him. We cried and cried and hugged and I begged him to not leave me. The last thing I said to him was I love you, goodnight.
The next morning my mom was making pancakes. I said that I would go wake Joey up for breakfast. I went into his room and knew immediately that he was gone. I won’t go into detail. I have PTSD I’m living with from this moment...but you should know that we received a call from the rehab facility the next day with an available bed. This is not acceptable. There are so many people who need help. So many incredible, kind-hearted, do anything for you kind of people...they need help. They need continued help...Not just spit out of the hospital without any resources or support. Three years after… my father passed away from the same battle. Maybe different substances, maybe not... but the same demon that is addiction. It stole half my family. A family from your community. You know the one….the “this doesn’t happen to people around here” kind of community. This WOD benefits Hope United. Please check out their website for more info on their long-term care facility in progress. Please consider signing up and sharing this to help someone you love or know. They NEED your help.
