“Lead a horse to water”, or simply “Event 1” is a 3K+/- trail run. All athletes must start from the leaning rest position. At the sound of 3-2-1-Go, athletes will perform 10 hand-release push ups, stand up and proceed with the run portion of the iteration. The lead athlete from each division must carry the American flag in an upright and vertical position. It may not be rested on the shoulder, ground, head or any other appendage or apparatus. You must secure and carry the flag at or above head height. If you feel tired, slow down or begin to feel muscle failure, you must relinquish the flag to the athlete passing. No female athlete will pass the female flag without swapping out. No male athlete will pass the male flag without swapping out. A male athlete may pass the female flag but is not permitted to pass the male flag without exchanging positions. Vis Versa. The flag will lead each division. All athletes must follow the designated trail marking signs throughout the entire course. At a pre-determined distance and location, both male and female athlete flags may be grounded and handed off to a judge who will be there to assist. Please note, the trails narrow into a one-track system. Please announce if you are passing on the right or left. Be aware of any twigs, roots, snakes, turtles, fawns, ferns, rocks or debris on the trail. There will be NO WATER station throughout this portion. First aid will be availble, if necessary. If you need medical attention and can no longer physically move, remain seated slightly off the trail where you are and let other athletes know you need assistance. There will be a sweeper following behind the last athlete to ensure safety and to clean up trail marking signs. There is no time cap. Your time stops when you cross the timing mat.

This hits home to me because Tim Davis began his career as a SERE Specialist before retraining to become a Combat Controller (CCT). More importantly, aside from the workout, this is his story.
Timothy Peter Davis was born to Mike and Sally (Sheldon) Davis on February 11, 1981. While serving his country in the USAF, he was killed in action in Afghanistan on February 20, 2009.
Tim, his older brother, Ben and younger sister, Noel, grew up in Montesano. Tim was involved with many sporting events throughout his years starting at a young age. Family times were spent in the outdoors that Tim dearly loved. Tim was generous, caring, competitive, strong willed, and saw the good in everyone.
He graduated from Montesano High School in 1999. While in high school, Tim excelled in academics, football, wrestling, and track. Tim was athletically gifted, which took him to the state football playoffs in his senior year and he also placed 7th at state for wrestling that year. He was well liked by teachers, classmates, and coaches. One coach told his mother, “he is the cream….like on milk, he doesn’t brag, or boast he just rises to the top, he’s the best”.
After graduation Tim enlisted in the United States Air Force. He completed his basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas graduating December 30, 1999 with the Omega Flight. He then went to Pararescue training, which was his original goal. He transitioned into becoming a SERE instructor (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape) at Fairchild AFB, WA. His training was completed on December 8, 2000, motto “…that they shall return”. While at Fairchild he met Meagan Robison, who he fell in love with and married March 20, 2004 on a beach in Maui. In July 2004, Tim was transferred to Hurlburt Field AFB, Florida, to begin training with Special Ops. He graduated January 2006 with the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron as a combat controller. Tim received the John A. Chapman Award, which was voted on by his peers for most inspirational. He was deployed to Afghanistan August 2007. While overseas, he received a purple heart for being wounded by shrapnel. Tim and his unit received a bronze star for their actions during one combat outing. He returned to the states, January 2008 in time for the birth of his first child, Timothy Peter Davis, Jr., who was born on the 7th of February 2008 in Spokane, WA. Tim was later redeployed to Afghanistan in November 2008. On February 20, 2009, Tim was killed in action near Bagram, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.
Tim loved being a father, protector, and provider to his wife and son. Meagan was the love of his life; he loved taking her out to the movies and sushi. Fishing was a favorite past time, along with football, wrestling, swimming, camping and family gatherings. His two favorite football teams were the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers. One of his last events before being redeployed was attending the October 2008 Seahawks/Packers game with many family members and friends. He couldn’t wait for the time to share these passions with his son, TJ. He loved his hometown of Montesano, and often visited his Uncle Jim whom he loved and who helped Tim become a fine, young man. He brought much honor to his mother and father. His older brother, Ben and his younger sister, Noel dearly loved and admired him. His cousin, Aaron Blankenship was like a twin brother to him. Tim’s competitive nature enabled him to excel at everything he attempted to do. Tim held himself to the highest standard, yet was humble, and he was a mentor to all.

Max sandbag burpees in 1 minute (60lb/40lb)
This will be used as a floater workout Sunday.
"Backwoods Paddle" or simply "Event 2" is a 1K Standup Paddleboard Race. Every athlete will be required to wear a PFD which will be provided for you. Paddleboards will also be provided. Each athlete will begin with feet out of the water on the edge of the river. At the sound of "3-2-1, GO", athletes will mount the paddleboard. Standing is preferred, but kneeling is accepted. Athletes will paddle down river around a buoy and back up river and over to the boat launch in a triangle shape layout. Your time stops once you cross the timing mat.
"Walter Payton" or simply "Event 3" is a 400m+/- weighted hill climb. Growing up on the north end of Chicago, we lived not far from legendary Bears running back Walter Payton. Every weekend in the off season you could watch him conduct uphill sprints and heavy carries at a large hill near our house. That's exactly what we will be doing.
At the sound of "3-2-1-GO", Athletes will don a GORUCK Rucker 4.0 (30/20), carry a GORUCK Sandbag (60/40) and begin the trek uphill. At the top of the hill, athletes will drop their sandbag and ruck at the designated location and proceed to run a 3k trek back to the beginning location of workout 1. **THIS IS NOT the same trail you came in on initially, so please stay on course and follow all designated signs and markers. This event will have a 2-part time. 1 for the hill climb and 1 for the remaining trail run down to the Huntinton Federal Shelter area.
This may or may not be the final event of day 1....stay tuned and be ready.
