The 98 TriComp – Frequently Asked Questions
What is The 98 TriComp?
The 98 TriComp is a same-gender pairs competition designed to test athlete General Physical Preparedness. Athletes will be challenged across strength, speed, endurance, and overall work capacity in true 98 Gym style.
Who can compete?
Anyone aged 18+ with a base level of training experience. We offer two divisions:
Intermediate Athlete – For 98 members who are consistent with training who may not regularly compete. We have prescribed weights for each event. In the case where a lighter weight is requested, a handicap will be applied (handicap details TBC on the day of competition)
Advanced – Open to members and invited team mates. These athletes should be experienced, familiar with heavier loads, higher-skill movements, and faster pacing.
Do I need to be a 98 Gym member to register?
Our Intermediate Division is for members only. The Advanced division is open to both members and non-members. You just need a same-gender partner and a willingness to work hard.
How do I know which division to choose?
Choose Intermediate Athlete if you train regularly but have little or no prior experience with competitions. Weights for this division are set, however, to ensure everyone can come and compete, we will reduce weights by request and a handicap will be applied.
Choose Advanced if you’re confident with the weights prescribed, heavier lifts, higher-volume workouts, and complex movements under fatigue. If you're unsure, select the division that will challenge you without compromising safety or form.
There will be a cap of entrants for each division so get in early.
What kind of events can we expect?
Without giving too much away:
Lift will test your strength under pressure.
Performance will test your speed, coordination, and movement efficiency.
Hybrid will blend it all—expect to be pushed across multiple systems.
Movements will be functional, scalable, and aligned with 98’s training programming.
Can we substitute a teammate?
Yes. Substitutions are allowed up until Thursday, May 22 at 5 PM.
Just email canberra@98gym.com with the name and contact info of the new teammate. The new team must meet division requirements.
What if I get injured or sick before the event?
If you provide medical documentation and withdraw at least 72 hours before the event, you’ll receive a full credit for a future 98 Gym event (valid for 12 months).
Otherwise, registrations are non-refundable. However, team substitutions are encouraged.
Will there be prizes?
Yes—there will be podium prizes for top teams in both divisions, plus bragging rights, a killer atmosphere, and likely some sore legs.
Is there spectator space?
Spectators are encouraged—bring your crew and some noise!
