Curwood Classic 2024
About This Competition
The Curwood Classic is back again for 2024! This year, the test features the three main powerlifts (bench, deadlift, back squat) and one bonus event. The person whose total is the highest within their division will be crowned "Curwood's Strongest!"
This year, our bonus event will be the Axle Bar Ground to Overhead. Some may choose to clean & jerk it, others will use grit and determination! All events will be indoors. Event format and rules will be published on April 15th.
All participants will follow the Sinclair method, which means your bodyweight is factored into your overall total.
We're looking forward to another great year with more strong, awesome people! Good luck!

Workouts
Athletes will get four attempts at an axle bar ground to overhead lift. The top three lifts will count towards their score. There are no standards with which the athletes must get the bar up overhead (must be reasonable and within event intent). There must be a lock-out observed. If the athlete has mobility issues overhead, speak with the judge beforehand to determine what full lock-out is for you. Speak with the judges prior to lifting if you'll be attempting anything that could be considered out of the norm (no "loopholes" allowed).
The event will be structured similar to an olympic lifting meet where each athlete must declare their start weight and they'll be given 2:00 per attempt. The weight will increase and the attempt will be made in the order of the weight. If an athlete fails a weight, they can stay at the same weight or go up, never down.
If you have any specific questions, email the event organizer beforehand.
Bar specifications:
- 7 FT in total length with 15.5" of loadable sleeve length
- 1.9" fat grip
- 24lbs
All athletes will get a 20:00 window to attempt max weight lifts in bench press, deadlift, and back squat. The use of a spotter is allowed but will not be provided. Raw lifts only (no "gear" allowed..example shirt or sling). Athletes are free to choose the order of their lifts.
Bench Press: Full lock-out required for good lift. The bar must touch the chest. Upper back and butt must be touch the bench for the lift to count.
Deadlift: No straps allowed. Conventional deadlift only. Athlete must be fully standing with shoulders behind the bar for the lift to count.
Back Squat: Must reach parallel for depth. Athlete must be fully standing for lift to count.
