Each unit is responsible for presenting a campsite that adheres to the principles taught in the Camping merit badge. These principles should be universal across the entire unit and managed by the SPL and leadership core.
The Camporee Gateway competition is conducted to inspire Scouts to use imagination, creativity and inventiveness in the spirit of teamwork and unit pride. This is a friendly competition. Gateways ways MUST be “Scout Built” with minimal adult intervention, and should be located at the entrance to the unit’s campsite. Gateways will be judged in the following criteria:
Construction:
- Safety must be followed at all times. You may NOT use a ladder for assembly, this is a BSA Safety Rule. All construction materials shall be assembled in a safe and secure fashion without creating a tripping hazard.
- You must build the Structure with natural wood which is found in nature, not store bought lumber such as 2x4’s you buy at a Home Depot.
- Wood must be secured with twine or rope and properly lashed.
- Digging holes on the field is not allowed.
- No Tie-wraps shall be allowed.
- Store bought decorations can be used for the gateway but they must be either affixed to the gateway with twine or placed around the gateway.
Imagination: This is your units chance to put their stamp on the gateway. The more imagination you put into your gateway the higher the score.
Visual Impact: No electrical equipment or batteries will be allowed in the Gateway display.
Required Items: American Flag, Unit Flags.
Judging will be based on the degree of quality and imagination your unit puts into their gateway. All judges are impartial.
