About This Competition

The 2024 Murihiku Strength Challenge is a 5-event Strongman-style competition that also incorporates the 2024 Southern Deadlift Champs. 2024 Murihiku Strength Challenge - Event 1 “D Thompson contracting SOUTHERN DEADLIFT CHAMPS” All divisions EVENT 1 FLOW: This is a "BEST OF 5 LIFT" where the athlete will have 5 attempts to deadlift the heaviest weight. The barbell will be loaded with 80kgs for the first lift and will rise by 20kgs until 200kgs where it will then rise by 10kgs until no athlete can successfully lift the bar. All athletes begin at the starting area. Athletes have up to 1 minute to lift the weight and can elect to skip over any weight they choose. The barbell that the athlete records their final successful lift will be the athlete's score for the event. SCORING This event is for the highest weight successfully lifted to the required movement standards. The athlete that lifts the heaviest weight will be awarded first place for the Event and receive 1 point. The athlete that lifts the second-highest weight will be awarded second place for the Event and receive 2 points. This continues in this format until all athletes have received a score. In the event of a tie, the athletes will share the placing and the points. MOVEMENT STANDARDS DEADLIFT The rep begins with the barbell loaded. For the rep to be awarded, the athlete must lift the barbell to full extension, hips, and knees locked out with the torso directly above them. The judge will signal for the athlete to lower the weight. The barbell must be lowered to the knees where it can THEN be dropped. The judge will call a successful lift. If a lift is unsuccessful, the athlete can have another go, as long as the lift is completed BEFORE the 1-minute timer is done. Suits, Straps and hitching are permitted, but the athlete must still reach full extension and all of the other movement standards mentioned..

2024 Murihiku Strength Challenge - Event 2 “WALLACE STONE THROW” MAX DISTANCE NATURAL STONE THROW (ANY WAY) All divisions EVENT 2 FLOW: Athletes begin at the starting position. At 3...2...1...GO! The athlete pick up the natural stone and proceeds to "throw" it as far as they can. The judge will measure the distance and record it. The athlete will have 3 attempts to record the athlete's best throw. Male athletes will use a natural stone weighing approximately 20kgs, Female athletes, approximately 12kg. SCORING This event is for max distance and is a "best of 3" style event. The athlete that throws the natural stone the furthest will be awarded first place for the Event and receive 1 point. The athlete that throws the natural stone the second furthest will be awarded second place for the Event and receive 2 points. This continues in this format until all athletes have received a score. In the event of a tie, the athletes will share the placing and the points. MOVEMENT STANDARDS WALLACE THROW Males ~20kg Females ~ 12kg The throw begins with the stone placed in the throwing zone. The athlete then picks the stone up and throws it as far as they can, using any method they prefer. Shot put, hammer throw, granny toss etc. No external objects may be used to assist the athletes The athlete will have 3 attempts to record their best distance. For the rep to be awarded, the athlete must ensure that they do not, with any part of their body, touch the ground in front of the throwing zone. This will result in a foul and the throw will not be recorded.

2024 Murihiku Strength Challenge - event 3 “KIWISKIPS AXLE PRESS” Max WEIGHT AXLE PRESS All divisions EVENT 3 FLOW: This is a "BEST OF 3 LIFT" where the athlete will have 3 attempts to Axle Press the heaviest weight All athletes begin at the starting area. The Axle will be loaded with 30kgs for the first lift and will rise by 10kgs until 100kgs where it will then rise by 5kgs until no athlete can successfully lift the Axle. Athletes have up to 1 minute to lift the weight and can elect to skip over any weight they choose. The weight that the athlete records in their final successful lift will be the athlete's score for the event. SCORING This event is for the highest weight successfully lifted to the required movement standards. The athlete that lifts the heaviest weight will be awarded first place for the Event and receive 1 point. The athlete that lifts the second-highest weight will be awarded second place for the Event and receive 2 points. This continues in this format until all athletes have received a score. In the event of a tie, the athletes will share the placing and the points. MOVEMENT STANDARDS AXLE PRESS The rep begins with the Axle loaded. For the rep to be awarded, the athlete must lift the axle overhead to full extension, hips, knees, and elbows locked out with the axle directly above their middle with control. The judge will signal for the athlete to lower the weight. The axle must be lowered to the chest where it can THEN be dropped. The judge will call a successful lift. If a lift is unsuccessful, the athlete can have another go, as long as the lift is completed BEFORE the 1-minute timer is done.

2024 Murihiku Strength Challenge - Event 4 “VEHICLE PULL” PULL A UTE 15 METRES FOR TIME All divisions EVENT 4 FLOW: Athletes begin at the starting position. At 3...2...1...GO! The athlete grabs the rope and begins to pull the vehicle, which will be stationary 15 metres away towards them. The time taken will be when the front wheels of the vehicle touch the line in front of the athlete. The athlete has a maximum of 2 minutes to complete this event. SCORING This event is for time, with a 2-minute time limit to complete it. The athlete that completes the event the fastest will be awarded first place for the Event and receive 1 point. The athlete that completes the event the second fastest will be awarded second place for the Event and receive 2 points. This continues in this format until all athletes have received a score. Should the athlete not complete getting the vehicle across the 15m line before the 2-minute time limit, their score will be 2 minutes PLUS any remaining metres as seconds. In the event of a tie, the athletes will share the placing and the points. MOVEMENT STANDARDS VEHICLE PULL The athlete begins seated in the area set up for the event. They may use the objects around them to press against for leverage. There is no requirement to remain seated for the duration of the event, but the athlete must remain inside the workout zone. The time starts at 3...2...1...GO!!! and will finish when the vehicle crosses the lane OR the 2-minute time CAP has elapsed, whichever comes first.

2024 Murihiku Strength Challenge - Event 5 “The STREAMFIT NATURAL STONES” 8 Natural Stones for time - Ascending weights 30-150kg All divisions EVENT 5 FLOW: Athletes begin at the starting position with their judge. At 3...2...1...GO! The athlete moves to the first natural stone and attempts to lift it onto the 44-gallon drum. If the athlete is successful in loading the natural stone, they may move on to the next one. Repeat this process until all of the stones are placed onto the drums OR the time limit for the event is reached. The time taken to load all 8 Natural stones onto the barrels will be the athlete's score. The athlete has 3 minutes to complete this event. SCORING This event is for time, with a 3-minute time limit to complete it. The athlete that completes the event the fastest will be awarded first place for the Event and receive 1 point. The athlete that completes the event the second fastest will be awarded second place for the Event and receive 2 points. This continues in this format until all athletes have received a score. Should the athlete not complete getting all 8 natural stones onto their respective barrels in the 3-minute time limit, their score will be 3 minutes PLUS any remaining stones as seconds. The time will be taken at each point a stone is placed and be used as a "split" time in the event of athletes finishing on the same stone. In the unlikely event of an overall tie, the athletes will share the placing and the points. MOVEMENT STANDARDS NATURAL STONES The athlete must load each natural stone individually onto their respective barrels. Each of the stones will start on the ground and be lifted onto the barrel by the athlete before moving to the next natural stone. The natural stones increase in weight after each successful lift.
