Workouts
In the 3 Rep Max Deadlift competition, sponsored by Move Right Performance Therapy and Recovery Center, athletes will have three attempts to lift their maximum weight in a deadlift. Proper form is required for a successful lift. The highest weight lifted will determine the winner.
**Weight belts are optional. No straps will be allowed.**
The fitness competition athletes will participate in the WV Wellness Festival 5k along with the other non-fitness-competition runners along a new course designed just for the 2024 WV Wellness Festival. The fitness competition athletes' scores will be separated from the rest, and then ranked (by gender) to determine the athlete's score.
In the 60-yard shuttle agility test, athletes will sprint to and from multiple distances (5, 10, and 15 yards) in a shuttle format, touching the ground at each turn. The test measures speed, explosiveness, and change-of-direction skills. Each athlete gets two attempts, with the best time recorded.
Each athlete will have one attempt to bench press the assigned weight for as many repetitions as possible (Men: 135#, Women: 95#). The head, shoulders, and buttocks must remain in contact with the bench and the feet flat on the floor. Each repetition must touch the chest and end with the arms in full lock-out extension.
Athletes will have three attempts to perform a standing broad jump as far as possible. The athlete stands behind a line marked on the ground with feet slightly apart. A two-foot take-off and landing is used, with the swinging of the arms and bending of the knees to provide forward drive. The athlete attempts to jump as far as possible, landing on both feet without falling backward. The score is the distance from the starting line to the back of the rear foot upon landing.
In the 4-Minute Max Meter Row, athletes will use a Concept 2 rower to cover the maximum distance possible within four minutes. The athlete covering the greatest distance wins. Each participant gets one attempt.
Before the athlete begins, set up the rower to accurately track distance:
- For the rower: Turn on the monitor by pressing any button
- Select Workout
- Select New Workout
- Select Single Time
- Use the arrow keys to move the blinking digit to set the time
- Use the plus or minus keys to increase or decrease the value
- Press the checkmark to begin rowing
This is a "choose your own adventure" style workout. Athletes will have three minutes to lift as much total weight as possible. There will be 20 and 30-pound wall balls and 50, 100, and 150-pound sandbags. The athlete may use the three minutes to lift any combination of weights and repetitions to lift the most total weight possible. A repetition will count when the weight is controlled and rests on the athlete's shoulder. The athlete with the most total weight wins.
Example:
20# - 3 reps = 60lbs
30# - 5 reps = 150lbs
50# - 2 reps = 100lbs
100# - 1 rep = 100lbs
150# - 1 rep = 150lbs
Total score is: 560lbs

Athlete will begin in a dead hang from the pull-up bar and must use an overhand grip. (no chin-ups). The athlete will then perform as many pull-ups as possible before coming off of the bar. Each repetition must begin with the arms fully extended in a hang, and end with the chin clearly above the bar. Kipping and butterfly pull-ups will not be allowed.
