The Freedom Games
About This Competition
Welcome to The Freedom Games!
CrossFit Greenwood, located in upstate South Carolina, is proud to host our 5th annual Freedom Games CrossFit Competition on June 25, 2022. The purpose of this competition is to recognize, honor, and show respect to individuals who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. At the Freedom Games, athletes from all over South Carolina and surrounding states come to compete in a competition that requires intense effort, just as fallen soldiers have given for our Freedom. Each year, CrossFit Greenwood selects a fallen soldier to honor at the competition. Family members attend the event as we dedicate the day to their loved one. We also donate a portion of all registration proceeds to a charity or memorial of the family’s choice.
On July 21, 2018, CrossFit Greenwood hosted its first annual Freedom Games Competition. This competition honored Army Captain, Kimberly Nicole Hampton, 27, of Easley, South Carolina who was killed in Iraq on January 2, 2004. Captain Hampton was the first female military pilot in United States history to be shot down and killed as a result of hostile fire. She was also the first female combat casualty in Iraq from South Carolina.

On June 29, 2019, CrossFit Greenwood hosted its second annual Freedom Games competition dedicated to Army Spc. Thomas Day Caughman, 20, of Lexington, South Carolina who was killed in Iraq on June 9, 2004 after volunteering for overseas deployment. During this deployment, Thomas was reassigned to the 458th Engineer Battalion, a unit that had been activated for deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The primary mission of Caughman’s unit was to patrol the streets of Baghdad in search of roadside bombs. While on such a mission, the up-armored Humvee on which Thomas was riding was struck by rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire leaving Thomas mortally wounded.

On August 29, 2020, The Freedom Games dedicated its third annual competition to Cpl. Matthew Dillon, 25, of Aiken, South Carolina. Matthew served in the support squadron of Miramar, Calif., which is part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. In 2006, Matthew was deployed to Operation Iraq Freedom, serving as a Military Policeman fire team leader. On December 11, 2006, Matthew’s Humvee was hit by a roadside bomb leaving him fatally wounded.

On July 24, 2021 the Freedom Games honored Army Spc. Geoffrey Whitsitt, 21, of Taylors, South Carolina. On January 13, 2010, while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom, Geoffrey’s Humvee hit a homemade bomb, leaving him fatally wounded.

This year, The Freedom Games will honor TSgt Phillip Myers, 30, of Hopewell, Va. Phillip died on April 4, 2009 near Helmand Province Afghanistan from wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Freedom Games has grown over the years and now hosts 200 athletes from over 35 CrossFit affiliate gyms, competing in same-sex teams of two in various skill divisions. Each team competes in several workouts throughout the day with one being specifically designed and named after the chosen fallen soldier. This workout serves as a reminder to all athletes that even when things are tough, they must continue to fight a little harder, to dig a little deeper, and to never give up. This is what American soldiers do for us!
Cash prizes are awarded to the top 3 Rx male and female teams while other great prizes will be awarded to all first, second, and third place winners.
